Asian TV Awards: Descendants of The Sun and MNET Pick Up Awards

The annual Asian TV Awards is back again! Celebrating the region’s best production and TV works, the ATA is the one time that the regional partners and stars can come together for a weekend of fun! With a total of 46 awards given out across two, there were unexpected wins and dark horses all around.

The night was hosted by  Adrian Pang, Stephanie CarringtonAlden Richards, and Baki Zainal that certainly made for an entertaining night as they bickered amongst themselves. Baki Zainal managed to win the crowd over with his attempts at chatting up all the ladies and his ability to speak over 3 languages.

A Touch of Green – a Taiwanese drama series – managed to bag 5 awards in total including 2 of the highly competitive categories “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” and “Best Actress in a Leading Role”. Its broadcaster – Public Television Service Foundation also clinched the “Terrestrial Channel of the Year” award with PTS. They certainly have a lot to celebrate!

Even though they were both held on the same night this year, Mnet Asian Music Awards managed to clinch the “Best Entertainmnet (One-Off/ Annual) award. Descendants of the Sun fans will also be glad to know that the drama managed to win the “Best Drama Series” award to the delighted screams of fans of the South Korean series.

“Best Actor in a Leading Role” was a surprise win, with Chen Kun-Chang beating out the crowd favourite Christopher Lee for his work in The Taste of Dang-Liang’s Family.

Other wins included The Tokyo Trials, which won “Best Documentary Series”, and MasterChef Asia  winning “Best Adaptation of an Existing Format”. Who says that we can’t do good adaptations?

Besides giving out awards, the Asian TV Awards were graced by performers all over the region as well. From Charli XCX to Amber Liu from f(x), it was a night of celebrity spotting. Singapore’s own jewel, JJ Lin also made a performance! It’s so rare to see him back in his homeland that the entire hall was packed out to see him.
