Whitney Houston musical The Bodyguard to tour Australia in 2017

Based on the 1992 smash hit movie of the same name, The Bodyguard will kick off its Australian tour in Sydney next April.

Former secret service agent Frank Farmer (played on screen by 90s heartthrob Kevin Costner) is assigned bodyguard duty, protecting superstar Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) from a stalker. After some initial head butting, the two eventually fall in love.

Featuring a host of Houston hits, including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, “Greatest Love of All”, and, of course, “I Will Always Love You”, The Bodyguard first opened in London’s West End in 2012, and ran for almost two years. A 2015 UK tour followed, along with stints in Europe, leading up to a West End revival earlier this year. Tours in Korea, Italy, and the US are scheduled for later this year, with Australia top of the list for 2017.

The cast for the upcoming Australia run has yet to be confirmed.

“I’m thrilled to that Australia will finally get to see this sensational, multi-million-dollar musical,” said co-producer John Frost. “When David Ian approached me in 2012 to co-produce the world premiere in London, I jumped at the chance to be involved. This iconic story and those soaring ballads were itching to be made into a stage musical, and its success over the past four years has proved it. The original production was extended many times with audiences flocking to the show, and the subsequent UK tour has broken box office records at most of the theatres where it’s played. I know Australian audiences will love The Bodyguard as much as I do.”

Full Australian tour dates and ticketing information have yet to be confirmed, but fans can sign up for the priority tickets waitlist at The Bodyguard website.
