This year’s Golden Melody Awards Festival will once again reprise the showcases that they put on last year, showcasing a number of critically acclaimed artists every night from the 22nd to 24th of June at Neo Studio, Taipei.
Each evening of the showcase collection will have a different theme, with the ‘Pop’ showcase on the 22nd, the ‘Rock & Folk’ showcase on the 23rd and an ‘EDM showcase’ on the evening of the 24th.
The Pop showcase will feature some of the brightest upcoming artists on the Taiwanese music scene, namely the likes of Waa Wei, Jia Jia, Murmur Show and Boxing.
Waa Wei is considered one of the greatest successes that came out of the convergence of the Pop and Independent music scenes in Taiwan, and is known for popular songs such as “My Dad’s Pen” and “When Women Are On Their Periods” which showcase her whimsical style and smooth vocals. She has been nominated several times for the Golden Melody Awards; most recently bagging a horde of nominations last year for her album “We Still Need To Believe In Love, You Bastards“.
Jia Jia is one of the most prominent Aboriginal powerhouses on the scene, whose set of clean and effortlessly sweet vocals is a unique feature which differentiates her from the rest. Having been nominated at the Golden Melody Awards at each of her albums so far, she’s famous for her ballad hits such as “Fill In The blanks” and “Destiny”.
One of the sweetest duos on the music scene at the moment, Murmur Show bagged the “Best Duo” award at last year’s Golden Melody Awards for their quirky and oh-so-entertaining brand of music.
Notably under the guidance of the beautiful Mandopop Queen A-mei, Boxing has not always had it this easy. Coming from their hometown to share the beauty of Aboriginal music with the city of Taipei and Asian audiences, being nominated this year at the Awards is testimony to their great music and hard work.
On the 23rd June, the Rock and Folk showcase will be welcoming some of the biggest alternatives stars on the scene including Monkey Pilot, Chalaw Bawiwali, Passepied and Matzka.
Monkey Pilot, an alternative grunge band who have racked up a series of Golden Melody Award and Golden Indie Award nominations since their debut in 2009 are set to leave you head banging with their performance. Check out their song “Let It Go” below.
Using music as a record of his life experiences, Chalaw’s music is used to preserve the disappearing memories of his people. His heartfelt acoustic music is based on his ideas about the world around him and nature that surrounds him. Won’t you come and have a listen?
Japanese pop-rock band Passepied will also be gracing the showcase with their presence which is weird, vintage yet intriguing. Check out their extraterrestrial sound in the vid below!
Making it big with his namesake band in 2010, Matzka is a Reggae kind of guy who aims to create his own genre through mixture of Rock, Jazz, Rap, R&B, Folk, Heavy Metal and even Hip Hop! His throaty vocals and his humorous personality are sure to get the crowd going.
On the final night, last but not least will be the EDM and Hip Hop showcase with some of the swaggiest artists around, including the likes of Poetek, Starr Chen, My Skin Against Your Skin, and Nick Chou.
Poetek is one of Taiwan’s upcoming Hip Hop superstars. Originally coming to the audience’s attention through his YouTube videos which have millions of views, his ingenious lyricism and mad skills have made him a crowd favourite both in the underground and mainstream scene, even garnering him several accolades at the Golden Indie Music Awards.
Chen began his meteoric rise to critical acclaim with his production of Jolin Tsai‘s mind-blowing 2015 single “Play”, and has since then become hot property, producing for the likes of Show Luo and coming out on his own as one of the most promising new artists in Asia.
My Skin Against Your Skin
Composed of Andrea and Yi Silu, the duo’s urban rhythms have taken them all around the world, even at MIDEM festival in France and the Glastonbury festival in UK in 2015. Dubbed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs of Taiwan, I’d be inclined to agree, given their awesome brand of electric and rock and roll music.
The definition of swag in Taiwan (basically), Chou’s bad boy image and sick beats have had fans swooning over him like mad. The multitalented singer, songwriter, DJ and actor says that music is his passion; especially the kind with a hard beat! “Just like most of the younger generation, I like music with hard rhythm. It’s my interest, my style, my attitude, and a grooving in life!”. Given his heartfelt melodies and music, we know he’ll shine at this year’s Golden Melody Showcase!
The 2016 Golden Melody Festival Showcase will take place from Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th June at Neo Studio, Taipei, Taiwan. For more information see the Golden Melody Festival website.
