It’s all too easy to dismiss Kuala Lumpur as a stopover destination, but this vibrant and ethnically diverse city is brimming with breathtaking sights and fantastic night markets, as well as being home to Petronas Towers, the worlds tallest Twin Towers.

That being said, if it’s a party you’re after, Malaysia’s capital city continues to reinvent itself, with nightclubs like Kyo putting it on the map as an international party destination.

The Kyo brand originated in Singapore before taking its underground concept to Kuala Lumpur. Nestled inside the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Hotel, The 770 capacity club combines visual artistry with quality music, food and drink, drawing inspiration from Japanese art and theatre with it’s design across two rooms: Kyo, the main flagship space, and Ren, a more intimate cocktail space.

‘We built Kyo on the ethos of escapism’, explains founder, director, and entrepreneur Godwin Pereira.

Kyo has set it’s sights on becoming an iconic destination in it’s on right, and if the club’s second birthday party earlier this year is anything to go by, they’re well on their way with One Records head honcho Subb-an and DJ Hedspin headlining the milestone event, and heavyweights Len Faki, Mano Le Tough, Ben Gold and Cosmic Gates just some of the names that have appeared in Kyo KL so far.

“Kuala Lumpur has the right elements for a club concept like kyō to thrive,” Pereira shares. “It has a cosmopolitan dynamism and a music scene teeming with numerous sub-genres and collectives, although there is yet to be one specific venue that caters to all of these genres. Kyō KL was created to fulfill this purpose: Housing a spectrum of genres both up-and-coming and forgotten, to bring together a community of music lovers who can enjoy these in one venue.”

Aesthetic and great music and aren’t the only things on offer at Kyo with the club hosting old and new school hip-hop, urban and R&B nights every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday alongside their regular events. Last year the club held a ‘kyochella’ event with customised flower crowns, airbrush tattoos, face painting and a shot ferris wheel. With a global expansion on the horizon, Kyo also engaged in a partnership with iconic London nightclub The Egg, which saw the brand head to London in late 2018.
