We finally arrived at Incheon airport after a looooooong trip. We got in a taxi van and the driver was wearing while gloves just like our keyboardist Kenny Korvette did. This was definitely a good sign!
We checked in to the Amanti Hotel in Seoul and took a jetlag-healing nap before getting ready for our Zandari Festa warmup show at Strange Fruit in Hongdae. It took some time for us to spot the small entrance to the indie club, but luckily a very pretty local stopped to help us out. The inside of Strange Fruit was covered in posters and there were CDs, books, and records everywhere. We liked the room a lot and thought it had a really good vibe. Jihong is the owner and he greeted us with a welcoming smile and was wearing a Beach Boys t-shirt, so we liked him straight away! He also turned out to be a true gentleman, and after sound check he took us to a local Korean barbecue restaurant. The food was tasty, spicy, warm and delicious.
After dinner we spent a few hours checking out the other bands that were playing at Strange Fruit this evening, including a cool Taiwanese funk-rock outfit. Then it was our turn so we went onstage and did our thing. It seemed like the crowd enjoyed our show and afterwards Jihong played Beach Boys records in our honour. It was getting late, so decided we better leave for Amanti. We have a big night tomorrow as that’s when our official Zandari Festa showcase is.

We got up around noon and found a little pastry/coffee place close to our hotel. It was delicious and every time we ordered something they gave us free pies and biscuits! Our official Zandari Festa showcase took place at Club Freebird in Hongdae. There was no soundcheck at the venue, so we went on at 6 pm sharp after a Japanese punk rock band. It took the soundman a few songs to get our sound right and then it was on! People danced and showed us their best surf moves. We heard after the show that several of the overseas delegates also attended our gig. It’s always hard to tell, but we feel like the concert was a success. Anyway we had a great time and after a few drinks at the club we packed our gear and went out for Korean barbecue with some locals.
As the night wore on we discovered just how much Korean people love to go out, drink, party and mingle with a bunch of Danes. At some point we spotted a whisky/live music bar and decided to head in. We then proceeded play all the Beatles repertoire on piano and guitar. After an acclaimed version of “Hey Jude” the bar was on fire and we requested some Korean songs from our new friends. After lots more whisky, we finally decided to head back to the hotel. Excellent food, some great new friends, and the chance to play for new fans and music industry staff … Zandari Festa was definitely a good time.
