We catch up with one of our favourite Korean rock bands Galaxy Express before they embark on their second trip SXSW in Austin, Texas. Our editor Johnny Au spoke to the guys about their brand new single “The Way”, returning to SXSW and their excitement at seeing Hanson.
What’s new with Galaxy Express?
We released a brand new single on March 11 called “The Way.” The song was only recorded, mixed, and mastered on March 8, so it’s really, really new. “The Way” is an instrumental track and has a strong psychedelic feel to it. We think it’s really good. “The Way” is available through iTunes. Please check it out! And we’ll be putting out a music video for the track likely at the end of the month. The plan was to have the music video come out last week too, but we ran out of time.
Oh, and you know what else is exciting… we’ll be performing at SXSW in Austin, Texas this week! SXSW is always an amazing time and we’re really looking forward to soaking up all the great vibes, meeting loads of people, and to playing some great showcases on March 17 and 18.
Why are you excited about returning to SXSW?
The festival is a blast! We were lucky enough to get invites to perform in 2011, 2012, and 2013. We haven’t been there in four years, though, and have really missed it. During SXSW, Austin is filled with music fans and musicians from all over the world and there is so much great music to be heard everywhere you go. It’s an amazing environment to be in.
What do you want to get out of SXSW this time round?
Popularity, money, worldwide acclaim… but we’ll settle for just having some fun, discovering some new music, and making some new friends!
What should the audience at SXSW expect from this time Galaxy Express?
The can expect to feel excited. Our music will get you amped up pretty quickly. Don’t fight it. Just embrace these feelings and get wild with us. You’ll be happy you did.
Have you planned anything special for your showcase?
We’ve been a band since 2006 and are going to compact all the best parts of Galaxy Express into a high-energy 40-minute set. There’s going to be lots of rock ‘n’ roll, some punk, and some psychedelic music too. There may some new music mixed in there as well. It’s going to be a good time.
Are there any bands you want to check out this year at SXSW?
We want to see Hanson! We’re curious to see what “MMMBop” sounds like now that the guys are old. And we want to see Weezer too. When they perform in Korea, they usually cover Kim Kwang-seok’s “Becoming Dust.” I’m guessing they won’t be covering any Korean songs in the States, but it would be really awesome for us if they did!
Will you be eating some the famous Texas BBQ while you’re in Austin?
Definitely! We’ll even eat plates, knives, and forks if there are bits of BBQ left on them. We love Texas BBQ. In next my next life, I want to come back as a BBQ if I can.
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
We’re going to play lots of shows and work on new music with hopes of putting out our fifth full-length next year. Please check us out if you get the chance. We’re going to be doing some very cool things.
Galaxy Express is showcasing at SXSW on Friday 17th March at K-Pop Night Out at The Belmont 9:30pm to 10:10pm and Saturday 18th March at Barracuda Backyard from 1am to 1:40am. For more information see SXSW and Galaxy Express Facebook.
