Hello Asia’s Cassandra Monjo speaks exclusively to Jimin from K-Pop girl group AOA about her successful debut solo project OOTD. Jimin took the time out of her busy schedule to talk about what OOTD (Outfit of the Day) means to her and the difference in working as a soloist compared to working in AOA. She also talks about wanting to collaborate with Jay Park and working with MC META on ‘Unpretty Rapstar’. We also ask Jimin where she sees herself in the future.
What does this solo project mean to you as an artist?
I think it was an opportunity for me to take one step closer to my dreams.
Ever since appearing on ‘Unpretty Rapstar’ you have been steadily showing the public your rap skills. You’re also talented at playing instruments. Do you have any plans to show the public your skills as a musician and as a member of the AOA BLACK, or will you continue focusing on rapping for now?
It would be great if I could show both sides, but as I’m still learning I want to show my best in all my music.
You’ve done a lot of collaborations in the past, and ‘Call You Bae’ features EXO’s Xiumin. Is there anyone you want to work with in the future?
Personally, I’m a big fan of Jay Park and would love to do a collaboration with him.
What feels the most different when working as a soloist compared to when working as AOA?
With my solo work, I got to plan the overall style and layout of the song. So I was able to create a sound that I felt confident in and I was really proud of the outcome. But I felt a lot of pressure without the other AOA members.
How have you developed as an artist since your debut with ‘Elvis’
I still have much to learn but I’ve experienced and learnt a lot through different opportunities.
How do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I want to have become a stylist artist.
What have you learned from your experiences collaborating with famous rappers?
It was an honor to work with MC META on a song called ‘T4SA’ while I was on ‘Unpretty Rapstar’. It was so exciting just meeting him and it was like a dream that I was able to work with him. I want to develop myself as an artist and meet him again, and I hope to become an artist like him.
AOA have worked hard and solidified themselves as the trend in girl groups. Now that you have come this far, what would you say to your past self if you could?
Well done, Jimin. Continue to work harder to become an artist who can influence many people in good ways ^_^
What kind of concept would you like to do in the future?
I showed my lovely side through my first single “OOTD” and I’m also planning to create more singles in the future with OOTD that suits me. Please look forward to it.
Would you like to say anything to all of your Australian fans?
Dear Australian fans! I haven’t been able to meet you yet but thank you so much for your support and love. I will continue to be Jimin, who tries her best! Please show your love and support for AOA and me, Jimin! I hope to see you in Australia! ♡
