(G)I-DLE, the six-member South Korean girl-group, has grown from strength-to-strength, exploring bold concepts that serve to emphasise the unique sound they have developed over the last two years that they have been active.

(G)I-DLE’s third mini-album I Trust topped iTunes’ Top Album Charts in 61 regions worldwide and entered 5 Billboard charts. Their success has brought them international fame, the group cementing their global status with Republic Records in The US, only further accelerating the group’s trajectory towards mega stardom.

In tandem with this success, (G)I-DLE was expected to visit 32 cities around the world – including stops in Australia – earlier this year. However, due to the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour was cancelled and instead rescheduled to an online concert; I-LAND : WHO AM I is scheduled to be live streamed this weekend, the 5th of July.

Ahead of the show, our editor Anastasia Giggins, had the opportunity to speak with Miyeon, Minnie, Soojin, Yuqi, Soyeon, and Shuhua to hear what keeps them motivated, how they keep their own colour as (G)I-DLE, and their constant love for their fans, NEVERLAND.

Later this week you will be meeting your fans across the globe with your online concert I-LAND : WHO AM I. What are you most looking forward to? Can you give us any clues or insight into what we can expect?

MIYEON: There are many non-title tracks we haven’t performed and sung on stage yet. Please look forward to 2020 (G)I-DLE ONLINE CONCERT ‘I-LAND : WHO AM I’!

YUQI: I’m so nervous to show individual and unit stages that NEVERLAND has never elsewhere. Please look forward to the upcoming online concert!

When preparing for this online show, did you find that the process was different compared to preparing for a stage performance? If so, in what ways was this process different?

YUQI: This is the first concert we are having, but the preparation is not much different from offline concert. We are practicing really hard to show our fans unique performances.

SHUHUA: The only difference is that we won’t have NEVERLAND cheering for us during the performance. We would have felt so much more energised.

When you’re going through difficult times, what gives you the strength and motivation to push forward?

SOYEON: I think of NEVERLAND who gives unconditional love.

MIYEON: Most of my strength and motivation comes from our members, family, and NEVERLAND. When I think about people who love me, I naturally gain strength to move forward.

You have previously spoken about how you want (G)I-DLE to be different from other K-Pop groups. In what way do you want to achieve this? Is this a constant process of reinvention?

SOYEON: I believe that every K-POP group has its own individuality. I value and emphasize (G)I-DLE’s unique characteristic in order to be differentiated from other groups.

YUQI: I want to keep our own colour as (G)I-DLE, and continue doing what we wish to accomplish through music.

What other concepts or genres would you like to try in the future?

SOOJIN: There are many concepts and genres we would like to try, but I want to try something bright and exciting!

MINNIE: We haven’t tried bright concept yet, so that’s what I want to try.

It has been around two years since your debut and you have all achieved so much in this time. What have been some of the most proudest or most memorable moments for (G)I-DLE?

SOOJIN: The first day of debut is the most memorable moment for me.

SHUHUA: I was so proud of (G)I-DLE when we first won at a Korean music show with our latest song, ‘Oh My God’.

Who influences and inspires you?

MINNIE: I tend to express my feelings through music. I get inspired by my own story or from other people’s stories. Also, there are times when I get inspired when watching a movie.

SOYEON: I get inspired by our members. I always think about each member when writing a song to imagine which song fits (G)I-DLE the best.

If you had the chance to perform or collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

MIYEON: I have always loved Beyoncé and Sia whom has a unique voice.

MINNIE: Definitely Troye Sivan!

What can we expect from you in the future? What are your plans for the rest of 2020, going into 2021?

SOYEON: 2 years have passed already. I want to keep trying hard to write songs and practice hard for NEVERLAND.

MINNIE: We are having the very first online concert next week! We hope you guys stay tuned for it and enjoy!

10. Do you have a message for your fans?

MIYEON: Dear NEVERLAND ❤ We will try harder to cheer you up and make you laugh during this hard time. Thank you always for your support and I love you all.

MINNIE: It has been a while since I have met NEVERLAND in person. I miss you all so much. I hope to meet you in person soon. Until then, take care of your health everyone.

SOOJIN: NEVERLAND~ Are you eating well? Health is the best! Sleep early and think of (G)I-DLE a lot too. ❤
