Want the opportunity to play in Korea? Well now’s your chance! Korea’s largest music showcase festival, Zandari Festa, is currently accepting applications from international acts.
Zandari Festa 2017 will take place in Seoul’s Hongdae area from September 29 – October 1. International acts are welcome to apply for a showcase slot up until May 31. Applications are being accepted from Korea-based performers until June 30.
Last year’s event featured more than 160 acts from 18 different countries. It was also attended by delegates from a number of Korean labels and festivals along with notable overseas music companies including European booking agents and festivals like Primavera Sound, Focus Wales, Liverpool Sound City, V-Rox, Exit, and Tune in Tel Aviv.
Nearly 60 global talents made the trip to Seoul to perform at Zandari Festa 2016 including Malaysian pop-punk band An Honest Mistake. Vocalist and guitarist Darren Teh talks about his experience at the festival below.
Why did you like being a part of Zandari Festa 2016?
I really liked all the international ties that we made. We were able to connect with other artists, and have even collaborated with some of them since the festival. As well, it was awesome to get to meet with the delegates, some of whom we would have never had the chance to interact with if not for Zandari Festa.
What really struck me about the festival was the fact that it was organized by musicians for musicians. There was a lot of heart in it for music development, but the business aspect wasn’t overlooked. Coupling these two together made Zandari Festa great and much better than other festivals. There were proper sessions for all artists to mingle with the delegates and that itself set the festival apart from the rest for us.
What are some of the benefits of playing at Zandari Festa for international bands?
Getting to play for a new audience is a big one for most acts, and that was great. As well, watching and learning from the other artists on the bill definitely helped us to up our game. And for us, the relationships we were able to make during the festival have proven to be really beneficial.
Since performing at Zandari Festa, we’ve released a remix album called #AnHonestMixtape where it features 16 remixed tracks of ours by some of the top electronic producers in Malaysia as well as friends that we met at Zandari Festa 2016. We did a track with Love X Stereo from Korea, the British/Korean duo Southway, and Paranoid City from the Philippines – who were all performers from last year’s Zandari Festa. We’ve kept in touch with lots of other artists we met there as well.
We have also managed to work with neighbours from Singapore and Thailand that we met in Seoul and were invited to perform at their festivals. Zandari Festa was a great experience for us, which is why we applied to play again this year as soon as the artist application opened!
