Japan’s annual New Year’s Eve television special broadcasted by NHK has announced the artists that will participate in this year’s Kohaku Uta Gassen. The program, Kohaku for short, divides the most popular music artists of the year into competing teams of red and white. The “red” team or akagumi is composed of all female artists, while the “white” team or shirogumi is all male. At the end of the show, judges and the audience vote to decide which group performed better. The honour of performing on Kōhaku is strictly by invitation, so only the most successful singing acts in the Japanese entertainment industry can perform.
In its 69th year, forty-two artists are scheduled to perform on this year’s program with 21 artists on each team. There is a mix of veteran performers like Itsuki Hiroshi and Ishikawa Sayuri, and we will see first-time appearances by Aimyong and DAOKO on the red team, and King & Prince, Suchmos, Junretsu, and YOSHIKI feat. HYDE on the white team.
