The 2015 Miss Universe title descended into farce after the host of the event announced the wrong winner live on international television.

26 year old actress/model Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, a Filipino-German actress and model born in Stuttgart and raised in Cagayan de Oro was originally announced as the runner up to 21 year old Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo. The crown had already been presented to Ms Arevalo by last year’s Miss Universe winner Paulina Vega when host Steve Harvey announced to the audience that he had made a mistake.

Ms Vega was then forced to remove the crown and give it to Miss Philippines Ms Wurtzbach.

Miss USA Olivia Jordan finished third

In the Philippines, the presidential palace led the nation in hailing the victory of the model “In bagging this victory, Ms Wurtzbach not only serves as a tremendous source of pride for our people, but also holds up the banner of our women and of our country, as a true representative of what the Filipina can achieve,” Mr Aquino’s spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.

The 64th edition of the Miss Universe pageant is its first edition since former owner Donald Trump sold the organisation in September.
