Singapore Sound System

Singapore radio station Lush 99.5FM and the National Arts Council Singapore (NAC) present a showcase of contemporary Singapore-made music at BIGSOUND in Brisbane, Australia.

Singapore Sound System takes place at Ric’s Big Backyard on 8th September 2016 and will feature performances by electronic duo, .gif, instrumental rock band, In Each Hand A Cutlass, hip-hop rapper, THELIONCITYBOY, and a experimental beats, hip-hop, part-improv set by Kiat/Intriguant/Vandetta for audio-visual collective, Syndicate.

Programme Director of Lush 99.5FM and artist known as Vandetta, Vanessa Fernandez says “Music biz people talk about Asia as this growing market but we’re not just a commodity, we’re a community with a unique perspective.”

Talking about the Singapore music scene Fernandez adds “You wouldn’t expect that there are so many Singaporeans making music in English, much less that our scene is so varied or that our artists are quite conceptual in their approach. Hearing is believing and we welcome everyone to the Singapore Sound System experience.”

Artist Profile



Tucked between dark beats and immersive vocals lies Singaporean indie-electronic duo .gif. The duo have earned critical comparisons to the likes of Portishead, Little Dragon, and Björk through publications like Thump, VICE’s music channel, FasterLouder, and Earmilk. The pair often draws from literature and film in their music, and have recently launched their sophomore album, ‘soma’.


In Each Hand a Cut

Instrumental music from Singapore. A bit of post-rock, some ambient textures, touch of progressive rock, metal up yours and epic cinematic soundscapes. The band is made up of Daniel Sassoon (guitars), Amanda Ling (keyboards), Nelson Tan (bass), Jordan Cheng (drums), Sujin Thomas (guitars).



Uncaged in the form of THELIONCITYBOY is Asia’s latest ally in music after partnering with BMBX, a label formed by from the BLACK EYED PEAS. A rapper, producer and music activist, he has been seen on TEDxSingapore, while building superfans and a network of industry champions at MIDEM 2012, A3C 2013, SXSW 2013, CMW 2013, Music Matters 2013 and most recently, CMW 2014.



Syndicate is Singapore’s foremost forward-thinking audiovisual collective and independent record label. With an ethos focused on experimentation and self-expression, Syndicate artists have presented a versatile range of works – from live electronic music showcases to architectural projection mapping, art installations and photography. Since its inception in 2010, the collective has represented Singapore in the US and Europe paying capacity crowds in intimate clubs and international music festivals.
