Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken box office records in China with a stellar opening day with an estimated $US33 million in ticket sales.
Disney has said the $US33 million opening day is the studio’s biggest opening day in China and the highest Saturday opening day in Chinese cinema history.
China will help decide if The Force Awakens tops Avatar as the highest-grossing film in Hollywood history. Avatar took in $US2.8bn after its December 2009 debut.
The original Star wars trilogy and its subsequent prequel was not shown in Chinese theatres until last June. In its promotions for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney featured 500 Stormtroopers on the Great Wall and promotions with Chinese pop star Luhan.
