Japanese rock star and classical composer Yoshiki made a special SXSW appearance at the screening of We Are X – the documentary about his band X Japan. Yoshiki performed a one hour set on a grand piano with a string quartet after the screening of the film. All songs were performed without vocals. Emotions were high as Yoshiki recalled his time shooting the documentary and talking about deceased members Taiji and hide. During one song dedicated to Taiji and hide, Yoshiki stopped playing and could be heard crying – no doubt the memories of their tragic passing is still raw. Yoshiki also paid tribute to David Bowie with a composition cover of “Space Oddity”. A touching Q&A at the end of the performance bookended an emotional appearance. Photos by Johnny Au.
