Famous worldwide for their Xiaolongbao, dumplings, rice and noodles, Taiwanese restaurant Din Tai Fung has created a special Mother’s Day Treat just in time for this year’s Mother’s Day. Since it is for Mothers Day why not have my mum review this special menu?

We started the Mother’s Day Treat at Din Tai Fung World Square with their signature Xialongbao. The freshly made dumplings was steamed to perfection with the pastry al-dente and not sticking to the baking paper below (a good sign of freshness – frozen xialongbao sticks to the paper). Inside the dumpling we have the tasty pork filling with the signature soup (watch out you don’t squirt any on yourself!). Serve the xialongbaos with supplied vinegar and sliced ginger.



The second dish that was served for the Mother’s Day Treat is the Pan Fried Shrimp and Pork Potstickers – a new dish at Din Tai Fung that was added to the menu last week. Six pieces of Jiao Zi that is made to order, steamed then lightly pan fried. The base is thin and light with nice crispness. The filling is a good mix of prawns and pork.

The perfect ending to the Mother’s Day Treat is the gorgeous Red Bean Rose Bao. Sweet pink bao pastry is shaped in a rose and leaf and steamed. In the middle is a sweet red bean filling. A small amount of sweet condensed milk fills out the presentation. Best eaten hot with the fluffy sweet bun contrasting with the red bean.


We also sampled two new dishes on the Tin Tai Fung menu. Firstly we have Seafood Jiao Zi which is the alternate version of the Cantonese yum cha favourite Har Gow (Prawn Dumpling). Steamed Jiao Zi has the same prawn and bamboo shoots filling as a Har Gow. Again the freshness of the dumplings is the standout of this dish. It doesn’t fall apart when you pick it up.


The Vegetarian Egg Fried Rice with Mushroom and Truffle Oil is a must-try. The first thing you notice when the dish is served is the aromatic truffle oil which beautifully balances the egg and shiitake mushroom in the rice. A perfect ending to a great Mother’s Day meal.


The Mother’s Day Treat will be available for $25 at Din Tai Fung World Square, Central Park, Chatswood, Miranda and Melbourne Emporium on Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May. Mother Day Treat includes six Xialongbao, six Pan Fried Shrimp and Pork Potstickers and one Red Bean Rose Bao.

The new menu items Seafood Jiao Zi and Vegetarian Egg Fried Rice with Mushroom and Truffle Oil is currently available.
