Playlist: A reminder that Death Grips are a force to be reckoned with

Okay, so let’s take it back to the Big Day Out of 2013. The festival may have been on its way out but it still had some pretty big punches to pull before the final nails were well and truly hammered into the coffin.

It was the first time I was introduced to Death Grips and still stands out as one of the most brutal, intense shows I have been to. And that’s saying something, given they were by no means a headliner and were playing to a crowd who I remember, were partly taking refuge from the burning sun outdoors. I came across Death Grips without really realising I was; they were one of the first bands I saw that day, having spent the initial first hours stuck in a media room doing press. And what an introduction to that year’s BDO it was too.

Memories of MC Ride, bare chested and guttural screaming, lurching his way across the stage into the faces of the front row are still burned in my head. ‘Who the fuck is this and what am I watching?’, I remember thinking. And yet, I couldn’t draw myself away.

Government Plates was my entry point from then on and since, I (as well as other Death Grips fans) have eagerly taken in the ensuing two releases from the band in The Powers That B and last year’s Bottomless Pit. The impact Death Grips have had on hip hop culture and the way the genre is perceived and twisted and intensified has remained unsullied. Their return to Australia (announced this morning) is an exciting one, but a timely one too – we’re in need of a shake up, a slap across the face of a wake up call, and Death Grips are the band to do it.

Lock in and revisit their sound below or, if you’re a newcomer to the Death Grips family, welcome. Don’t miss them in August.
